Quality Deer Management (QDM) works to enhance the fun and excitement of deer hunting by encouraging the protection of most or all yearling (1½-year-old) bucks combined with an appropriate harvest of does, when necessary, to maintain a healthy population in balance with habitat conditions and hunter desires. The Quality Deer Management Association (QDMA) has worked to promote sustainable, high-quality deer populations, wildlife habitats and ethical hunting experiences through research, education, advocacy, and hunter recruitment. QDMA teaches deer hunters how to improve local deer populations, habitat and hunting experiences.
QDM operates on 4 basic principles:
Herd Monitoring - Collecting harvest and observation data from participating members
Herd Management - Using data collected to make informed decisions about the local deer population
Habitat Management - Improving the local habitat to meet the needs of the local deer herd
Hunter Management - Organizing and communicating summaries of data collected and the management decisions made from that data
The Avoca-Howard QDM Co-Operative is a community of landowners, habitat managers, and hunters dedicated to the QDM practice in the Avoca-Howard region of upstate NY.
